Ryan Gosling, 44, Stars in Breathtaking New ‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer Fans of ‘The Martian’ Will Love

Days after Amazon MGM debuted the first poster for Project Hail Mary, the film has just received an even more exciting update. The studio helped ease the Monday blues by dropping the first official trailer for Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi epic, which can be found below. Project Hail Mary is based on the novel by acclaimed sci-fi author Andy Weir, who is also the mind behind The Martian, which was adapted into the 2015 film starring Matt Damon and nominated for seven Oscars. The sci-fi epic has been set for release on March 20, 2026, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Into and Across the Spider-Verse) directing a script written by Drew Goddard (Daredevil, The Martian, World War Z). Sandra Hüller will also star after recently earning an Oscar nomination for her work on Anatomy of a Fall.

Project Hail Mary has all the potential to not only be one of the best movies to come out of 2026 but also one of the best sci-fi films of all time. It tells the story of Ryland Grace (Gosling), a scientist-turned-school-teacher who wakes up one day to find himself on a spaceship light years from Earth with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As his amnesia wears off, he learns that the fate of humanity is in his hands — his mission is to find a solution to an alien space algae that’s begun consuming the sun. Fans of space sci-fi films like The Martian, Ad Astra (Brad Pitt), and Interstellar (Matthew McConaughey) are sure to love Project Hail Mary, which currently holds a 4.5/5 on Goodreads with over 800,000 reviews.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Has a Special Connection to ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’

The audiobook for Project Hail Mary, which sits at a 4.9/5 on Audible, is narrated by Ray Porter. Porter is an iconic voice actor who has taken on many notable roles over the years, but arguably his most famous role came from voicing Darkseid in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Porter will not have any role in the 2026 film, and the voice role of Rocky — who fans of the book are extremely attached to — has gone to James Ortiz. Liz Kingsman, Ken Leung, Lionel Boyce, James Wright, Bastian Antonio Fuentes, Robert James Smith, and Isla McRae will also star in the film.

Project Hail Mary blasts into theaters on March 20, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and check out the first official trailer above.
