‘Ballerina’ Bludgeons Will Smith’s Forgotten Assassin Bomb at the Box Office

There’s no denying that From the World of John Wick: Ballerina hasn’t performed quite as well as it was expected to. The first theatrical spin-off of the blockbuster John Wick franchise had a tumultuous production that saw its budget balloon to a reported $90 million. But it had a disappointing debut some weeks ago, and has basically been erased by competition before even completing a month of release. With multiple new options available, audiences gave Ballerina a hard pass, as did theater chains. It lost over 700 domestic locations this week, as it struggles to hit its presumed break-even point of over $150 million.

With around $55 million domestically and another $53 million from overseas markets, Ballerina’s cumulative global haul now stands at $108 million. It’s the second-lowest-grossing installment of the John Wick franchise, which has generated over $1 billion worldwide. However, it’s worth noting that the only past installment that it has overtaken is the first film. The franchise has only gone from strength to strength since then, with John Wick: Chapter 2 grossing nearly $200 million, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossing over $300 million, and John Wick: Chapter 4 making nearly $450 million worldwide.

The fourth film seemingly closed the loop for the protagonist, played so memorably by Keanu Reeves. But a fifth film was recently confirmed. In any case, Reeves’ role in Ballerina was increased during its extended post-production, which saw significant reshoots being conducted. Starring Ana de Armas, the movie is set between the events of the third and fourth John Wick films, and is directed by Len Wiseman. Franchise overlord Chad Stahelski reportedly came in to oversee additional photography after the studio voiced its dissatisfaction with Wiseman’s original cut.

Will Smith’s Forgotten Assassin Movie Just Got Overtaken by ‘Ballerina’

Ballerina’s $55 million domestic haul puts it ahead of the $48 million haul of the mostly forgotten Gemini Man, directed by Ang Lee and featuring Will Smith in a dual role. The movie cost a reported $138 million to produce, but ended up losing Paramount over $100 million, according to reports. Globally, Ballerina has overtaken Jason Statham’s brutal revenge thriller Wrath of Man, directed by Guy Ritchie. You can watch the movie in theaters, or wait for it to hit PVOD platforms on Tuesday.
