James Gunn’s DCU is slowly taking shape with Superman about to dominate theaters. Due to this, companies like Funko have been celebrating the different corners of DC Comics. Whether it be from comic books, films or various TV shows, they’ve released a ton of figures in the lead up to the new live-action shared universe’s big screen debut. Now, one of the most beloved Batman series is getting a new set of futuristic Funko Pops.
Batman Beyond is the next series based on The Dark Knight to get a heroic Funko Pop collection. There are three figures in this new wave, including Terry McGinnis’ Batman, Armored Bruce Wayne, and the villainous Blight. Batman Beyond’s first villain also glows in the dark. If that wasn’t enough, Terry has a maskless Chase variant. Like previous Funko sets, there’s a lot of great detail to be found in this trio of figures. For example, Terry’s holding one of his signature Batarangs that comes out of his high-tech suit, and his wings are ready for flight. Bruce’s armored look is based off the beloved episode “Out of the Past,” which saw the return of Ra’s and Talia al Ghul, the latter of whom was voiced by Olivia Hussey (Black Christmas).
A Trip to Neo-Gotham City
While Bruce Wayne will always be the definitive person behind Batman masks, Batman Beyond made a strong case that there was room for other Dark Knights. The series starts out in the futuristic year of 2019 and sees Batman’s last night of crime fighting after he pulls a gun on a defenseless goon. Bruce retires the cape and cowl because of that. The series would then jump 20 years, when Terry McGinnis’ father gets murdered at the hands of wealthy businessman Derek Powers, aka Blight. Terry soon after discovers the Batcave and dawns the Batsuit. Bruce then reluctantly helps Terry on his own crusade to protect Neo-Gotham from a new generation of criminals.
Even though the series only ran for three seasons and 52 episodes, Batman Beyond‘s legacy has lived on through its unique stories, character designs, and merchandise. There have been more than a few failed attempts to get a Beyond movie or game off the ground, but Terry has seen his fair share of collectibles over the years. Action figures from Mondo and McFarlane Toys as well as Funko Pops have helped keep Batman Beyond in the pop culture conversation. This new Batman Beyond Funko set now joins the company’s latest Batman: The Animated Series Pop collection that was released earlier this year.
