‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ (2024)
Rotten Tomatoes: 75% | IMDb: 6.6/10
A sequel to the 1988 movie Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a gothic horror comedy directed by Tim Burton and written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Set over 30 years after the first movie, the film stars Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, now a mother and TV psychic who is still haunted by the memory of the titular Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). But when her estranged daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) is taken to the afterlife, Lydia strikes a desperate deal with the “bio-exorcist” to get her back. The film also features Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and more, with Catherine O’Hara reprising her role as Lydia’s stepmother, Delia Deetz.
A sequel that was in the works since the ‘80s, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premiered at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival and was subsequently released in theaters later that year. The movie received largely favorable reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing over $450 million worldwide. A campy and nostalgic legacy sequel that leans into practical effects and physical comedy, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice might not be quite as sharp and edgy as the original film, but it’s still an entertaining watch for fans of Burton’s ‘80s cult classic.
