Jensen Ackles is a busy man. But, after 15 seasons of Supernatural, with each one rounding out to somewhere around 22 episodes, bouncing around to different streaming projects is probably a breeze. While Prime Video subscribers wait patiently to see him return to the role of Soldier Boy in the fifth and final season of The Boys, they’ll first be treated to a brand-new character courtesy of his leading performance in the high-octane crime drama, Countdown. But it’s another fandom — one that’s away from the streamers and back onto network television — who are manifesting the confirmation that Ackles will return to the fold, with the following behind CBS’ Tracker anticipating any news of a guest-starring reappearance. And, we’re happy to be the ones to tell you that the foundation is already being laid for such a return.
While speaking with Collider’s Christina Radish about his work on Countdown, Ackles revealed that conversations had already begun that would see him reprise his role as the brother of Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw. He told Collider:
“We are discussing that as we speak. That is being talked about, so yeah, I would hope so. Justin [Hartley] is a dear friend of mine and getting to play with him is always a fun thing. So, yeah, there are talks of bringing me back. To what capacity, I’m not sure yet.”
The Busy Life of Jensen Ackles
It’s not just the fans who want Ackles to reprise his role as Russell Shaw in future seasons of Tracker; it’s the creative team as well. After making his grand debut at the very end of the first season, the character worked his way back into the storyline during the show’s follow-up installment. Executive producer, Elwood Reid, previously shared his hopes that Ackles would have more time in his schedule after filming wrapped on Season 5 of The Boys, telling TV Line:
“It’s so f**king hard to get their schedules. I mean, Jensen and I are friends. He was on a previous show of mine [Big Sky]. I love the guy. I text him all the time. I’m like, I’ll take three hours of you. He’s very busy as you know in The Boys universe. So when we can get him, we can get him.”
It sounds like there will be a bit of a break in Ackles’ insanely busy schedule, but we’d wager it won’t be very long, as he’s set to join his fellow The Boys actor, Aya Cash, in the upcoming prequel series, Vought Rising. The series will follow the early days of the corrupt corporation and put a spotlight on the atrocities committed by Cash’s Stormfront and Ackles’ Soldier Boy.
Countdown celebrates its Prime Video arrival on June 25.
