The countdown to MCU’s Ironheart series has begun. In a matter of weeks, we’ll meet Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) in her standalone series. The hype around the character is slowly and steadily building, and Marvel is not leaving any stone unturned to make viewers tune in when the series debuts. In a new interview with Good Morning America, Thorne and co-star Anthony Ramos were pleasantly surprised by former Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr.
Thorne joined MCU with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as an MIT student who has developed her own suit. Ironheart continues her story as she faces new challenges. Downey Jr., on the other hand, is returning to the cinematic universe as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. During Thorne and Ramos’ appearance at GMA, Downey Jr briefly made an appearance via a video call from the Doomsday set. In his signature fun manner, he shared excitement about Thorne’s character and also joked about being replaced by Ramos. He said,
“Ms. Thorne, I couldn’t be happier than to be seeing you bring Riri Williams to life. But, The Hood has me nervous. Is the hood green? Please tell me Mr. Ramos is not replacing me as Doctor Doom via Parker Robbins. Is there something they’re not telling me? Anyway, I don’t want to step on your interview. Long story short, Iron Man loves Ironheart.”
‘Ironheart’ Is a budding Anti-Hero
While Marvel’s marketing is adamant Riri Williams isn’t replacing Iron Man, she certainly is his spiritual successor. The series will see Riri return home to Chicago and cross paths with Parker Robbins, aka the Hood (Ramos), who introduces her to dark arts and magic. Clashing with her own talent for manipulating technology, Riri finds herself on a path of danger and adventure.
The show’s executive producer, Sev Ohanian, recently revealed that Riri might surprise fans by breaking bad like Walter White and Tony Soprano, but in all honesty, she sounds more like Tony Stark. He revealed, “She kind of breaks bad in the show, and we go to some uncomfortable places for audiences that I think will be really fun to explore, almost in the vein of Walter White from Breaking Bad or Tony Soprano.” Who Riri truly is we’ll only find out when the series debuts.
The first three episodes of Ironheart premiere on Disney+ on June 24. Check out the teaser above and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the series.
