It’s been a brutal month for The Wheel of Time fans since finding out Prime Video had cancelled the fantasy series, and now things have just taken an even darker turn. It was announced on April 25 — around a month before the show was canceled — that the original song “The Hills of Tanchico” was being considered for an Emmy by the Television Academy. Unfortunately, composer Nikhil Koparkar recently took to his personal X account to reveal that the song will not be appearing on the ballot due to “clerical issues.” It’s unclear at this time what the clerical error is that’s preventing the song from being recognized, but this is yet another thing that The Wheel of Time fans had to be excited about that has been snatched away.
It didn’t take fans long after The Wheel of Time had been canceled to put together a petition to save the series, which has since picked up steam to the tune of over 100,000 signatures and $15,000 raised. However, it was reported a few weeks ago that Amazon has no plans to shop the series and give it a chance to be revived on other streaming services, despite fans calling for Prime Video to let someone else finish the story. Writer and showrunner Rafe Judkins has expressed his sadness over the show being canceled, citing that fans deserve to see the story completed. The Wheel of Time author Brandon Sanderson’s response to the cancellation told a different story. While he admitted he feels for the fans, he says he “won’t miss being largely ignored.”
Why Did Prime Video Cancel ‘The Wheel of Time’?
The initial report of The Wheel of Time’s cancellation cited financial reasons as the primary factor in Prime Video’s decision to cancel the series. It also mentioned that several executives involved with canning the show were big fans, but this didn’t ease the sting of the news in the slightest. Prime Video has lifted The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power onto a pedestal in the last few years, installing it as its flagship property. This has been especially tough for Wheel of Time fans to watch, as it seems one fantasy series is being given preferential treatment over the other.
