New Pixar Movie Debuts With One of the Highest Rotten Tomatoes Scores for Recent Disney Animated Movies

It’s been a checkered start to the year with live-action releases of Snow White and Lilo & Stitch, but the next animated movie up on the slate for Disney’s Pixar company is picking up steam ahead of its release this weekend. Elio will touch down in theaters everywhere this Friday, but the review embargo for the film lifted yesterday, and early opinions for the film began pouring in. Elio has now registered enough reviews to be given an 83% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, a score which will be given the “certified fresh” label if it holds up. An audience score won’t be given until the film is playing in theaters, but this critics’ score is higher than Elemental and Lightyear, even if it does fall behind Inside Out 2.

Elio follows the titular character of the same name, who is a space fanatic with an active imagination. When he finds himself among the galaxy on a cosmic adventure, he must connect with aliens while navigating an intergalactic problem that will help him further become who he truly is. Yonas Kibreab stars in the lead role of Elio in the film, and recent Oscar-winner Zoe Saldaña can be seen as Olga Solís. Remy Edgerly, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil, Young Dylan, and Jake Getman will also star in the film, which was written by Julia Cho, Mark Hammer, Mike Jones, Adrian Molina, Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, Jesse Andrews, and Hannah Friedman. Molina, Sharafian, and Shi also directed the film. Elio will go up against 28 Years Later at the box office this weekend before squaring off with F1: The Movie the following weekend.
