It’s been a while since Mark Wahlberg delivered a solo blockbuster. His last film was Flight Risk, which debuted theatrically earlier this year. Directed by Mel Gibson, who’s having his own troubles, the film made less than $50 million worldwide against a reported budget of $25 million. Most of Wahlberg’s post-pandemic releases — at least the ones that secured theatrical runs — have hovered in this range. However, Wahlberg also appeared in a prominent supporting role in the video game adaptation Uncharted. Released in 2022, the action-adventure film has now found a new streaming home.
Uncharted will debut on Prime Video on July 15. Headlined by Tom Holland, the film was directed by Ruben Fleischer; it opened to mixed reviews, but emerged as a box office hit. Uncharted holds a 41% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Promisingly cast but misleadingly titled, Uncharted mines its bestselling source material to produce a disappointing echo of superior adventure films.” The movie was based on the Indiana Jones-inspired video game franchise created by Naughty Dog, the same studio behind The Last of Us, which airs on HBO.
The film had a famously long development period, with numerous directors involved over the years. At one point, Wahlberg was supposed to play the lead role of Nathan Drake, with director David O. Russell at the helm. Neil Burger, Dan Trachtenberg, Travis Knight, Seth Gordon, and Shawn Levy were also attached to direct at various stages. Eventually, Zombieland and Venom filmmaker Fleischer took over. He had a reported budget of $120 million to work with, and he delivered a solid hit that made nearly $410 million worldwide. This is a respectable haul, especially when you consider that Uncharted was released in the same year as Top Gun: Maverick, the movie that is credited for having revived the theatrical marketplace.
An ‘Uncharted’ Sequel Is in the Works
Despite its success — it’s the fourth-biggest video game adaptation of all time — Uncharted still hasn’t gotten the sequel that was promised to fans. Holland is a busy actor, who’ll soon begin work on his fourth solo Spider-Man movie. He’s currently working on Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey. Fleischer was recently handed the reins to the Now You See Me franchise, and is awaiting the release of the third installment, titled Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. The movie will be released theatrically later this year.
