‘Superman’s Cat Grant Talks About What She Wants For the Sequel [Exclusive]

Superman has just flown into theaters, but Mikaela Hoover is already thinking sequel. If it happens, she has some comics-inspired ideas about where she wants her character to go. Hoover, who stars as Daily Planet columnist Cat Grant in the James Gunn-helmed film, recently spoke with Perri Nemiroff for an upcoming episode of Collider Ladies Night while promoting the film, which opens in theaters worldwide this weekend. What Hoover wants to see in a sequel is a deepening of her character’s relationship with David Corenswet‘s Clark Kent, the mild-mannered alter ego of Superman:

“I want to dig into how in the comics she is so obsessed with Clark in the best way. He stands for everything that she never had in her previous life back in Hollywood. I would really love to dig into that, and that relationship there, and more of her relationship to [Jimmy] and [Steve]. I mean, all of it. I feel like we just touched the surface, not even, in this film. So, there’s so much there that I’m so excited to embark on, hopefully.”

There’s no indication that there’s a Superman sequel in the works just yet, but if the Man of Steel triumphs at the box office this weekend, it seems inevitable that The Last Son of Krypton will fly again.

Who Is Cat Grant?

Created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Jerry Ordway in 1987’s The Adventures of Superman #424, Cat Grant was originally introduced as the Daily Planet’s gossip columnist and a rival to Lois Lane for Clark Kent’s affections. Over time, the character has featured in many of Superman’s adventures; she briefly served as President Lex Luthor’s press secretary, and later struck out on her own as the head of her own media empire. Grant was also the single mother of a son, who was shockingly killed by Superman’s foe the Toyman. While Hoover will be the first actor to bring the character to the big screen, Grant has made a number of notable TV appearances. She was a main character on the CW’s Supergirl, where she was played by Calista Flockhart; there, Grant was the head of the media company CatCo, and employed Kara Danvers, the alter ego of Supergirl, as her assistant.

The Daily Planet is fully staffed in Superman in a way never before seen on the big screen, with a litany of supporting characters from across the Man of Steel’s continuity. In addition to Hoover’s Grant and Corenswet’s Kent, the film also features Rachel Brosnahan as reporter Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as cub reporter Jimmy Olsen, Beck Bennett as blowhard sports reporter Steve Lombard, Christopher McDonald as veteran scribe Ron Troupe, and Wendell Pierce as editor-in-chief Perry White.

Superman is in theaters now. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates and check out the Collider Ladies Night episode this weekend.
