8 Years Later, Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe’s 13% RT Box Office Bomb is Somehow a Global Streaming Sleeper Hit

Tom Cruise recently lit the world on fire with his performance in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, but eight years ago, he starred in a critically panned supernatural horror thriller that’s been a force on streaming charts. Cruise stars alongside Russell Crowe in The Mummy, the 2017 horror film following an ancient Egyptian princess who awakens from her tomb and brings with her incomprehensible terrors. The Mummy is currently streaming on both Netflix and Prime Video globally, and it’s been one of the most popular movies around the world, charting in countries such as the Dominican Republic, Thailand, Singapore, and more. The Mummy earned abysmal scores of 15% from critics and 35% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it still grossed $409 million at the global box office against a $125 million budget. The film is, unfortunately, only available to rent or purchase on Prime Video in the U.S.

Jake Johnson (New Girl, Into the Spider-Verse) also stars alongside Cruise and Crowe in The Mummy. Johnson has spoken openly about being excited to work with Tom Cruise on the film and signing up without a second thought. However, upon reading the script and learning that he was also going to be expected to do dangerous stunts, he admitted to getting some “cold feet.” Cruise helped him through this period of apprehension, giving Johnson access to all the private facilities where he trains and giving him nearly six months to practice, which took away all the jitters. David Koepp, Christopher McQuarrie, Dylan Kussman, John Spaihts, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet wrote the script for The Mummy, and Kurtzman also directed the film. He has not directed any films in the eight years since, only working on episodes of Star Trek: Discovery and The Man Who Fell to Earth.
