The ineffable end might stay ineffable. Good Omens star Michael Sheen has cast serious doubt over whether the series’ just-completed finale will ever actually be released, even though production on the final episode has officially wrapped. Originally renewed for a full third season, the hit Prime Video fantasy series starring Sheen as Aziraphale and David Tennant as Crowley was reworked into a single 90-minute special. The pivot to the special came in the wake of sexual assault allegations leveled at series co-creator and executive producer Neil Gaiman, who has denied all claims of non-consensual conduct.
Gaiman was involved in writing the finale but did not participate in production, and his company Blank Corporation was not involved either. In a new interview with The Times, Sheen revealed just how uncertain things still are.
“I really don’t know what’s going to happen with it. We [Sheen and Tennant] were both relieved we finished the story, but that’s within this really difficult, complicated, disturbing context. I hope people get to see it, but that, to a large extent, is out of our hands.”
Prime Video has not commented on whether the finale will be released, despite it now being completed. Filming reportedly wrapped shortly before Sheen’s interview. Meanwhile, Tennant previously confirmed to The Independent that they were returning for one last go: “We’re doing Good Omens again. We’re going back to do the final. We’re doing a final. There’s been a slight rejig with the personnel. But we still get to tell that story – I think it would have been very difficult to leave it on a cliffhanger. So I’m glad that’s been worked out.”
What Happened to Neil Gaiman?
Allegations against Gaiman—detailed in Vulture and a Tortoise Media podcast—include claims from nine women, some of whom say the author engaged in “rough” or BDSM sex without consent. Gaiman responded with a statement, saying: “There are moments I half-recognise and moments I don’t… I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.”
Good Omens, based on the beloved book by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, premiered in 2019 to wide acclaim. It quickly became one of Prime Video’s most popular fantasy series, earning an 86% critics score and 94% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2 debuted in 2023 and ended on a major emotional cliffhanger.
Both seasons of Good Omens are streaming now on Prime Video. Stay tuned for updates on the finale — if it ever makes it to screen.
