Nathan Fillion has been playing John Nolan on The Rookie for almost 10 years now, but he’s also heavily involved in James Gunn’s DCU. Fillion, who worked with Gunn on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, has been tapped for the role of Guy Gardner in the DCU. He’ll make his first appearance in Superman this week before also starring in Peacemaker Season 2 and, later, Lanterns.
Fillion recently caught up with Deadline on the red carpet at an event for Superman, and he was asked what he could tease about the DCU’s wider universe, instead of just one specific project. To no surprise, Fillion wasn’t able to completely spill the beans, but he did praise the work of James Gunn and also spoke on how the projects are all connected, which helps it feel like one big universe:
“It’s a continuous universe from end to end. You have Lanterns, you have Superman, you have Peacemaker. It’s all the same universe, it’s all happening at the same time. None of them are happening in a bubble…. Consistency. There’s consistency between these shows that make the universe real.”
While some fans may think it’s silly for a character like Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern to be one of the first featured in multiple projects, people said similar things about the MCU in the beginning. Iron Man and Captain America certainly weren’t as popular before being played by Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, but the idea of Hawkeye or Black Widow being featured characters in a major universe was laughable to fans in Phase 1. This proves that it’s less about choosing the biggest, most established characters to place at the forefront of the universe, and more about choosing the ones that can be written into the story the best. Gunn has more than proven to care about the quality of the writing over anything else, which will only serve the DCU well in the long run.
Another Star Will Be Seen in Multiple DCU Projects
One of the earliest DCU stars is Frank Grillo, who can be heard voicing Rick Flag Sr. — father of Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag — in Creature Commandos. Gunn confirmed long ago that Grillo would not only reprise this role in Peacemaker Season 2 opposite John Cena, but also in Superman. Flag Sr.’s DCU future remains unclear after that. He suffered a brutal attack at the hands of Clayface near the end of Creature Commandos, which will likely come into play when we see him in Superman soon.
Superman flies into theaters later this week, and Peacemaker Season 2 will be released on August 21. Stay tuned to Collider for more DCU updates and coverage.
