Zoe Saldaña’s Forgotten $72 Million Revenge Thriller Finds Streaming Success 14 Years Later

In 2011, 14 years before the controversial Oscars buzz of Emilia Pérez, Zoe Saldaña was on top of the world. Having recently starred in huge blockbusters in Avatar and Star Trek, the actress could’ve taken on almost any project, small or large. Among other forgotten projects, one of Saldaña’s most underrated movies was released in this period, namely the revenge thriller Colombiana, directed by Oliver Megaton of Transporter 3, Taken 2, and Taken 3 fame.

Following Saldaña as Cataleya, who “works as a contract killer for her Chicago-based uncle,” Colombiana is a hard-hitting, gritty action thriller that certainly pulls none of its punches. Proving divisive with audiences and critics, the latter gave the film just 28% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers more appropriately awarding it 67%. Colombiana was originally planned as a spin-off to the beloved Leon: The Professional, with Luc Besson producing the 2011 thriller, but instead it was crafted into a vehicle for Saldaña as her stock continued to rise.

At the box office, Colombiana didn’t make the impression higher-ups likely would’ve wanted, especially given the major star at the center. On a reported production budget of $40 million, the film only returned 1.8 times this investment, finishing its box office run on a global haul of $72.2 million from a domestic total of $36.6 million and a further $35.6 million from overseas markets. At the 2011 box office, the film finished the year as the 91st highest-grossing title, falling below the likes of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, The Change-Up, and others.

Colombiana is just one of ten movies currently occupying Tubi’s highest ranks. Chief among these, in top spot, is the Tom Hanks-led Forrest Gump, with the Palme d’Or winner Pulp Fiction at #2, The Quick and the Dead at #3, and Vin Diesel‘s Riddick at #4. It is Colombiana that places in fifth position, ahead of the 2002 Scooby-Doo adaptation at #6, James Cameron‘s 1997 classic Titanic at #7, Kevin Costner‘s Message in a Bottle at #8, Final Destination 5 at #9, and the third installment in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, Summer Vacation, propping up the top 10. With Tubi’s top 10 ever-changing, make sure to return to Collider to find out what’s popular.

Colombiana is streaming now on Tubi. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
