As far as contemporary movie stardom goes, Brad Pitt recently proved his worth with the sports drama F1. But if there’s one star who consistently gets butts on seats in theaters and eyeballs glued to television screens, it’s Jason Statham. Over a career that has survived and evolved across three decades, Statham has headlined old-school action vehicles, starred in major studio franchises, and appeared in a couple of blockbusters that have passed the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office. One of them is The Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment of the long-running action franchise, which is now racing up the Netflix streaming charts.
According to FlixPatrol, The Fate of the Furious finished fifth on Netflix on June 30, beating titles such as Raid 2, The Old Guard, and 28 Weeks Later. The movie earned 228 points on June 30, and has accumulated a total of nearly 800 points on Netflix so far this month. Directed by F. Gary Gray, The Fate of the Furious debuted theatrically in 2017, and marked Statham’s first proper appearance in the franchise; he was introduced as a villainous character at the end of 2015’s Furious 7. However, in typical Fast and Furious fashion, Statham’s character became an anti-hero immediately afterward, and has since become a critical part of the “family.”
The Fate of the Furious was a major box office success, grossing $225 million domestically and nearly $1.2 billion worldwide. It earned mixed reviews — The Fate of the Furious holds a 67% Rotten Tomatoes score — and was seen as a marked letdown after the widely acclaimed Furious 7. Statham headlined the franchise’s sole theatrical spin-off, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, co-starring with Dwayne Johnson. The movie made over $750 million worldwide. The series’ latest installment, Fast X, on the other hand, grossed over $700 million worldwide. A final film is in the works.
Statham Has Headlined a Trio of Tough Guy Hits Recently
Statham has had a splendid post-pandemic run, starring in hit original films such as Wrath of Man, The Beekeeper and A Working Man. He also headlined Meg 2: The Trench, which made nearly $400 million worldwide. Only two of his movies — Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Expend4bles — flopped at the box office. Statham will next be seen in Mutiny, directed by Jean-François Richet, and an untitled new project from Ric Roman Waugh.
