This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.
Every once in a while, there comes a movie whose concept is so wild that you have to see it to believe it. 20 years ago, a sci-fi comedy called The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy debuted in theaters and it provided a different approach to stories that take place outside planet Earth. If you’ve either never watched it or completely forgot about it, you will be glad to know that the Infinite Improbability Drive is directing the movie to Hulu on July 1.
The characters of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy are enough of a reason for you to want to check it out: Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus) plays a two-headed, three-armed alien who just wants to have fun in the middle of chaos. The late Alan Rickman (Harry Potter film series) voiced a depressed robot, and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit trilogy) plays a grumpy British guy who is taken outside the plane just before it explodes. The cast also features Zooey Deschanell (New Girl), Yasiin Bey (Begin Again), John Malkovich (Opus), Helen Mirren (MobLand), and an unforgettable narration by Stephen Fry (Time Travel Is Dangerous).
The story is also incredibly inventive. In it, planet Earth is destroyed because it became an inconvenience to other alien races. In order to make room for a hyperspace express route, aliens decide to simply demolish it — luckily for Arthur Dent (Freeman), his friend Ford Prefect (Bey) is able to hitch a ride on a passing spaceship and he becomes pretty much the only human in the entire universe aside from Trillian (Deschanel). And all of this is just the start of the intergalactic adventure.
Will There Ever Be a New ‘Hitchhiker’ Adventure?
Back in 2019, it was announced that Hulu was working on a TV series adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. At the time of the announcement, screenwriters Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) were attached to helm the series. However, there have been no developments ever since, which makes us wonder if the project is dead in the water or if the movie’s addition to the library is the first indication that the series is finally gaining traction.
As any fan will tell you, there are endless possibilities for a Hitchhiker’s Guide TV or even movie franchise. The story is based on the novel series by British author Douglas Adams — which, in turn, were based on a popular radio sitcom. The franchise has a history of going through development hell before arriving on screens — despite the popularity of the novels, the movie only premiered 26 years after the first volume was published. Now, it’s already been 20 years that the movie debuted, which begs the question: will fans only get Hitchhiker’s adaptations every two decades?
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy arrives on the Hulu library on July 1.
