14 Years After Flopping With Critics, This Billion-Dollar Blockbuster Is Climbing the Streaming Charts

The Transformers franchise is one of the more contentious ones in modern cinema. The films receive poor critical reviews but often lead to huge financial success, unless it’s the highest-rated entry in Transformers One, which inexplicably defied the impressive critical reception with a disappointing box office haul. Helmed by the equally controversial Michael Bay, there’s no doubting just how popular the movies have been over the past 20 years, even if they are often the source of parody.

Now, 14 years since its release, the third installment in Bay’s adaptation of the Hasbro source material is a surprise hit on streaming, officially becoming one of the ten most-streamed titles on Pluto TV in the U.S. as of June 17, 2025. Transformers: Dark of the Moon, a film considered one of the worst entries in the franchise, isn’t the only Transformers movie making its mark on Pluto TV, with the film joined by both the 2007 first installment and Revenge of the Fallen in the top 10. Of the three, Revenge of the Fallen has the worst Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score at just 19%, with Dark of the Moon at a poor 35%, and the original at a comparatively brilliant 57%.

These three explosive-heavy blockbusters aren’t the only popular titles proving successful on Pluto TV, with the top 10 also including, in tenth place, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, with Tom Cruise‘s final entry in the franchise currently in theaters. The comedy classic Caddyshack is at #9, with Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf of Wall Street at #8, and Terminator: Dark Fate at #7. Positions #6, #5, and #4 on the list are all taken by the aforementioned Transformers movies, with James Cameron‘s box office behemoth Titanic at #3. Just missing out on the top spot, Christopher McQuarrie‘s Jack Reacher is at #2, with the first-place prize going to Danny Boyle‘s highly acclaimed horror 28 Days Later, with the newest entry into the franchise having just hit theaters.

How Did ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ Do at the Box Office?

Despite being panned almost universally by critics, viewers flocked in the millions to check out the third installment in Bay’s adaptation, with Dark of the Moon becoming one of only a handful of movies to ever break the billion-dollar mark. Officially, the film earned $1.12 billion globally, split between a domestic haul of $352 million and a huge international total of $771.4 million. Made on a reported budget of $195 million, it saw an impressive 5.8 times return on investment, which helped Dark of the Moon become the 35th highest-grossing movie of all time to date.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is available to stream on Pluto TV now. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
